Mervyn makes it 250 not out! thumbnailPortrush parkrun race organiser Mervyn Thompson - complete with trademark head band - celebrates after completing his 250th run on Saturday morning. Mervyn is among a small group of runners to have achieved this feat.

SATURDAY was a red letter day for Portrush parkrun and, no, it wasn't because I was taking part for the first time.
Nor that it was the only parkrun which survived the arctic weather.
No, much more important than me breaking my duck was the fact that parkrun organiser Mervyn Thompson was running the Saturday morning 5K run along East Strand for an incredible 250th time!
That's five years of running or 1,250k of soft sand, gales, high tides and dodging dog walkers - the usual obstacles confronting runners at one of the world's most picturesque park runs.
It's quite an achievement and was marked in fine style by his fellow runners who presented the father of two with a cake, medal and, most importantly of all, a specially commissioned headband!
Needless to say, given his years of practice, Mervyn had enjoyed his cake and a cuppa' by the time I finally made it back to the Watersports Centre where I began by asking him if he remembered his very first park run.
“The third week of the event was my first park run," recalls Mervyn.
“The running group I was with at the time was cancelled and we were told to go and do the park run instead.
