McFall claims Cadet Kart title thumbnailKarting champion Bobby Joe McFall finished on the podium twelve times in 2017

BUSHMILLS youngster Bobby Joe McFall upset the odds at the weekend by clinching the Cadet Kart title as a newcomer in the Northern Ireland Kart Championship.
From fourteen starts this season the ten-year-old made it podium number twelve at Kirkistown Race Circuit on Saturday to sew up the series in his Honda kart.
McFall also came runner-up in the Ulster Kart Championship with dad Gerard admitting the schoolboy had taken many in the sport by surprise - himself included.
“The first race of the season was in Portstewart and Bobby Joe somehow won it," he told Chronicle Sport. "The number of podium finishes is just unbelievable.
“None of us ever expected this to happen; this season was all about Bobby Joe getting comfortable in the kart and getting quicker as the season progressed.
“This was the first time he had been on a track against people around his age, many of whom were more experienced than him. They've been racing since five. "The kart we bought him was second hand and the chassis cost a few hundred pounds. It was very much the case that he had to drive it hard all of the time.
“He got the hang of it pretty quickly; there is no doubt that what he has done is pretty special. I'm not sure if something like this has ever been done before."
Next season McFall makes the step up to the 125cc class where he will join older brother Ben, who finished third overall in this year's championship standings.
