Derry blown away by brilliant Clifford thumbnailSean McKeever tries to evade the attentions of his Kerry opponent

THOUSANDS of Derry supporters made the trip to Croke Park on Sunday with high hopes of their minor team returning as champions but instead they saw the greatest under 18 player ever to play the game and they could do little to stop this football genius from a little club named Fossa.
David Clifford hit 4-4, set up a further 1-2 and Derry simply did not have the power to stop him.
Maybe Derry could have been better set up defensively. They played their normal man to man game and that gave Clifford the space he needed. Conor McCluskey is a good man marker and despite his best efforts he simply could not contain this brilliant player. It was a bit surprising that Derry did not play a sweeper given that their defence had leaked quite an amount of scores on their way to the final.
When the impressive Callum Brown came in at full forward and won the first few balls that came his way Kerry quickly double teamed him to curb his influence. Kerry is huge GAA county with twice the number of clubs that Derry have so that has to be taken into consideration. Apart from winning the four minor titles in a row they have also won the last three senior colleges titles.
