Derry give Mayo a fright but fade in extra time thumbnailDerry player Chris McKaigue tries to block this Mayo player during their weekend game

IN a wall to wall thriller in front of 11,465 mostly Mayo spectators at Castlebar a gallant effort from Derry fell just short in normal time which ended in a 1-12 to 1-12 draw.
With three minutes of normal time remaining Derry led by 0-12 to 0-11. Mayo were pouring forward as Derry tired and when young sub Conor Loftus hit a quick 1-1 Derry looked dead and buried but not so.
A superb angled ball from Carlus McWilliams into the goalmouth was flicked to the net by Mark Lynch. They then had a slim chance to win it from a difficult sideline free taken by James Kielt but the angle proved too tight.
It was a cracking game of open football with the woodwork at either end being a barrier to scores. Good saves, bad misses and superb scores kept the big crowd on their toes. The few hundred Derry fans were drowned out by the 11,000 plus home support.
