‘Special week’ lies in store at Portstewart thumbnailRory McIlroy will be back to defend his title when the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open Hosted by the Rory Foundation tees off at Portstewart Golf Club on Thursday

PORTRUSH golfer Graeme McDowell is hoping a return to familiar territory will help him rediscover that winning feeling at this week's Dubai Duty Free Irish Open, hosted by the Rory Foundation.
McDowell, who played Portstewart's Strand links many times growing up on the north coast, believes he is not far away from landing a first title since winning the OHL Classic at Mayakoba in 2015. Speaking ahead of this week's eagerly anticipated European Tour event, the 37-year-old admitted it was great to be back home ahead of what promised to be a 'very special week.'
“I think I'm playing quite well at the moment and I'm feeling good about my game," admitted the 2010 US Open champion.
“I feel I'm not far away and it would be special to contend this week in this part of the world.
“It's always a very special week and there's no reason why I can't play well here," he added.
McDowell is one of a number of Irish players looking to follow in the footsteps of tournament host Rory McIlroy who won the title in such dramatic circumstances at the K Club 12 months ago.
