Eoghan Rua claim Ulster League win
Thursday, 30 March 2017
DESPITE going down to 14 men early in the second half, Eoghan Rua Coleraine came back from a 0-7 to 1-3 half-time deficit to beat Dungiven 1-12 to 0-10 to lift the Ulster Senior Football League title at a sunny Glenullin, the home of the holders, on Sunday afternoon. This all-Derry final was closely contested throughout and, even though three players got red cards, there was little or no rancour in the entire game.
The sides were level at the end of the first quarter.
After Dungiven had opened the scoring with a fine Feargal Higgins point Eoghan Rua got onto the scoresheet with a goal in the seventh minute.
A lung-bursting run from centre back Liam McGoldrick from deep in his own half paved the way for Sean Leo McGoldrick to set up his brother Ciaran to slot low to the Dungiven net.
Despite that fine score Eoghan Rua went on to stutter throughout the first quarter.
Dungiven hit the next three points to lead again, Ryan McElhinney with two and Feargal Irwin on target.
A well-worked Colm McGoldrick point had Eoghan Rua back on terms again but going into the second quarter Dungiven edged ahead again with two quick points from Seamus Higgins and Ryan McElhinney, 0-6 to 1-1 now the score.
Dungiven were enjoying plenty of possession from breaking ball around the middle third and, indeed, Eoghan Rua turned over a lot of ball with some poor passing from frees and open play.
However, the Coleraine defence worked hard to keep Dungiven at bay for the most part and the losers did not do enough to convert the possession they had in more points.
The sides traded points going into the last five minutes of the half before an added time Barry McGoldrick point from a free left the minimum between the sides at the break, Dungiven ahead 0-7 to 1-3.
