Neil McCafferty silences the ‘boo boys’ with piece of magic

MIDFIELDER Neil McCafferty silenced his critics with an expertly taken free-kick for what proved to be the game's turning point on Saturday. The former Portadown man showed unerring accuracy to find the top corner with a free from all of 25 yards to make it 3-2 and finally break the visitors' spirit.
It was the perfect riposte to a section of home supporters who spent much of the afternoon berating the Derryman who had endured a frustrating afternoon up to that point.
“It was a great finish from Neil," said his manager, Oran Kearney.
“I think he was having trouble with a few corners, especially from the far side where it was very wet and boggy and there had been a few heckles and shouts and everything else.
“But it typifies Neil to be honest and I said it to the lads after in front of everybody that he's one who's very strong mentally, he's a really strong character.
“I even turned to the bench after the free was awarded and said I wouldn't be surprised if Neil sticks this in the top corner and gives it one of those to everyone. To be fair to him, that's Neil all over. In his first season here he did that for fun from free-kicks and it's nice to see that it's still there," added Oran.
McCafferty admitted that he hadn't scored as many free-kicks last year as he would have liked but said he never stopped believing in his ability.
