Comment: Any rally is better than no rally
Thursday, 19 January 2017
SINCE July when news first broke that the Circuit of Ireland would be placed on ice for the 2017 season questions immediately started being asked. 'What next?' was perhaps the one on the lips of most fans.
News and information has been very thin on the ground over the last seven months. Then on Thursday a surprise announcement was made at a motoring event in England. Finally: answers to all those questions.
So what do we know? The International Circuit Challenge will take the place of the Circuit of Ireland Rally.
Running over two days in early April it will comprise eight special stages and boast the thirty best home-grown R5 drivers. Naturally, there are some who don't agree with the call to cap the number of competing cars and feel it should be open to more. But in keeping with the international theme R5 seems the most plausible way to go; non-homologated models like the effervescent Ford Escort just won't cut it this time.
