Eagles fly to top of Ballycastle Winter League

THE 2017 Winter League began at Ballycastle Golf Club over the weekend with the team of 'Eagles' the early leaders.
Led by club stalwart Gerard Dowds, there were strong performances from all his team-mates that included Terence McHugh, Eoin McCloskey, Neil McGarry, Chris Kelly, Gerard Dowds, Michael Campbell, Robin McHugh and Sean Casey.
George McVeigh top scored in section two of the 13 hole stableford competition on Saturday with a splendid total of 34 points. Terence McHugh took the runner-up spot with 32 points and John Michael was third with 30 points.
In section one, Philip Cullen was the winner with 30 points, followed closely by Allan McCook in second place and Aaron McAuley in third after both returned scores of 29 points.
The good scoring continued on Sunday with Mark Molloy leading the way in section two with 34 points, some way clear of runner-up Sean McLean who carded 28 points.
The Section One prizes went to Philip Michael who had a handful of birdies in his winning total of 32 points followed in second place by Eoin McCloskey who pipped Liam McGonigle and Paul Brogan on countback after all three recorded scores of 30 points on Sunday.
An 18 hole open Stableford Competition takes place at Ballycastle every Wednesday. Last week's winners were Kevin Murphy with 44 points, Ivor Torrens with 43 points and Colin Millar with 42 points.
