Dunlop will have final say on bike choice
Thursday, 1 December 2016
WILLIAM Dunlop plans to hold further talks with Halsall Racing this week after agreeing to ride for the former British Superbike Championship outfit next season.
Top of the agenda when Dunlop speaks to team owner Martin Halsall is the make of bike they believe will hand them race wins at the 'big three' internationals.
The importance of making the correct call could not be higher as the 31-year-old intends to scale back his involvement in the Supersport class during 2017.
Although the 600cc category has been kind to Dunlop, especially in recent campaigns, he has revealed to Chronicle Sport that it will feature less in his plans.
“I'm going to speak to Martin over the next couple of days and hopefully we can narrow down the bike we are going to run on the roads," explained Dunlop.
“The bikes that are winning are more or less the same but the BMW is obviously the bike that stands out for a lot of people, especially when you look at what Michael [Dunlop] and Hutchy [Ian Hutchinson] achieved in all the big Superbike races this year. The BMW is definitely a good all round package for road racing.
“I'm putting the 600 bike to one side next year and focusing my efforts on the big bike. I love the 600 but I feel I have to do this to win with the Superbike."
He added: "Ideally Martin needs to know what way we are going before Christmas so that we can get things in order and begin testing early in the New Year.
