Thursday, 26 January 2012
TOMMIE Simpson led the scoring at Ballycastle Golf Club over the weekend, gathering 26 points from the eleven holes in play to win Saturday's section one stableford competition.
Tommie, playing off 13, overcame the unpleasant weather conditions superbly on Saturday and even managed a birdie three at the tough ninth hole on his way to victory.
Second place in section one on Saturday went to twelve handicapper Patrick Dixon with a total of 23 points.
In section two, 14 handicapper Terence Bakewell was the winner ahead of Jim McCann on countback after both golfers returned scores of 23 points.
The weather proved to be equally unpleasant on Sunday with high winds and heavy showers once again battering Ballycastle's golfers.
There was a three-way tie for top spot in Sunday's section two competition with Ivor Torrens, Austin Mullan and Francis og McGinn all handing in scores of 23 points.
When all three back nines were compared, Ivor was awarded first place, Austin was second with young Francis unlucky to miss out on the prizes in third.
Sunday's section one competition was won by Owen Kennedy on 20 points with Lawrence McQuillan finishing second ahead of Eoin Donnelly on count-back after both men scored 19 points over the eleven holes. Paul McKillen, playing off 21, was the winner of Wednesday's Open competition just ahead of 14 handicapper Martin Morgan on countback after both members scored an excellent 39 points over 16 holes. Third place went to Gerard Butler with a total of 34 points.
Paul McKillen carried his midweek good fortune on into the weekend and particularly to the 17th hole where on Saturday he recorded the only two of the day!
Paul wasn't finished there and just to prove that lightning does sometimes strike twice, he managed another two at the same hole on Sunday and this time shared the pot with Eoin Donnelly!
Three rounds of the P.J. McIlroy & Son sponsored Winter League have now been completed with team Goosen in the lead on 22 points followed by team Harrington on 20 points and team Daly in third on 19 points.
Team Harrington were the top scorers in week three with a five card total of 154: Tommie Simpson (38pts), Niall Shivers (31pts), Brendan McGarry (31pts), Danny Taggart (28pts) and Paul Surgenor (26pts).
Tommie Simpson's superb score on Saturday means he now leads the individual standings on a total of 101 points. Derek Bell is currently in second place on 100 points with Jonathan McBride and Declan McCarry in a tie for third on 99 points.
