Derry lose to Antrim

Thursday, 8 July 2010

Derry lose to Antrim thumbnaillebrate beating Derry to win the Ulster title at the weekend.

A LATE goal from former All Star Jane Adams was enough to break Derry hearts and secure a last-gasp win for Antrim in the weekend's Ulster Senior Camogie Championship final at Glenariffe.
The Oak Leaf girls looked to be holding on to their trophy when they led by five points with five minutes to go but a grandstand finish by the home side meant it was revenge for last year for the Saffrons.
Antrim led by a point at the break, 1-1 to 0-5, but Derry scored a goal and a point in the opening minutes of the second half to take control of the game.
However, Loughgiel's Raquel McCarry fired a goal in the closing stages to breathe new life into the Antrim challenge.
And it was left to Rossa camog Adams to put the final nail in the Derry coffin with the decisive goal from a free with almost the last puck of the game.
It was the perfect answer to the critics who suggested that Antrim's defeat to Derry in the corresponding game last year hinted at a change in the balance of power within the game in Ulster.
“After we lost to Derry in the Ulster final last year, and again two months ago, we've wanted to prove what we can do and do ourselves justice," said match-winner Adams.
“It doesn't matter what type of team we put out, it hurts to lose to Derry so we're delighted to keep going to the end and get the winner.
“It was a tough game and we knew we would have to play right to the end.
“I wish Derry all the best in the Intermediate Championship. Hopefully they can go all the way."
