SDLP Councillor Margaret Anne McKillop has claimed that a decision by the PSNI to charge for policing sport and charity events is going to destroy the very fabric of society which brings people together to celebrate what they have in common rather than what divides them.
Cllr McKillop was referring to the Heart of the Glens Festival which began this weekend when 3,500 will have to be found to cover the new regulations and she wants them challenged.
Cllr McKillop commented: "Ironically Orange Order marches which divide people do not have to foot the bill for policing yet events such as the 'Heart of the Glens Festival' is facing a very uncertain future because it is so difficult to raise thousands of pounds of money to pay for a traffic management plan and the cost of police officers time.
