DES KINGSTON, RTE Super Garden of the Year Winner 2017, launched the new Armoy Community Garden last Friday.
His words were met with stunned silence. A silence of intensity, touching on the painful. Gerry Burns of Armoy Community Association told The Chronicle: "Des had come to open his heart to us, as we step ahead in making this garden to support our community on the banks of the Bush."
Des Kingston lives in Limerick but was born in Tipperary in 1964; son number seven in a family of eight boys and one girl.
He had never travelled to Northern Ireland before. During the event, Des reflected on why not and plausible reasons and excuses he had invented, as he began sharing in Armoy last Friday.
He opened his heart. It was a heart scarred by suffering. It was his sensitivities; the darkness; the depression; the remorse and regret that made this 'a memorable day', a day to listen, a day to learn.
Gerry continued: "We listened to Des, 54 years old. The Des who won RTE Super Garden and the Des before that.
“Des and his life, his gardening, his youth, his marriage and family, his work and everything he is and isn't. All; yes, everything, impacted by his addiction. "Everything impacted by drugs and alcohol. Now, four years into recovery it is about living the present moment. In Armoy, it was a day for Des and us to be grateful.
“Des was filled with a great sense of gratitude; gratitude to be alive and to be in Armoy. Gratitude that after 54 years, in one day of his life he visited: the Titanic Centre; the Shankill and Falls Road; the Antrim Coast Road; the Dark Hedges; and in Armoy he also met Raymond Mc Mullan and Conor Mc Auley. Salvage does interest Des.
“Before coming to Armoy Presbyterian Church Hall, he met Melanie and John Ward at Limepark.
