A LOCAL Councillor has hit out at Transport NI who he claims failed to place warning notices on flooded roads last week causing a young motorist to have an accident.
The incident happened on Thursday January 4 when, due to flooding on the Loughareema Road, the driver almost ended up in the Vanishing Lake.
It is believed she was driving from Cushendall to Ballycastle when she hit a large pool of water on the road before aquaplaning across the carriageway and hitting a narrow stone wall on the opposite side.
Independent Cllr Padraig McShane said large chunks of masonry were knocked into the lake leaving a gaping hole.
He told The Chronicle: "It could so easily have been a tragedy. Road Service had been notified of flooding on the carriageway at the Vanishing Lake more than four hours before the car accident.
“I also telephoned the dedicated Road Service emergency hotline to report the flooding at 3 :54 pm on Thursday. The accident happened after 8pm that evening."
