THE PRINCIPAL of Roddensvale School, Mr. John Madden, has been awarded a British Empire Medal (BEM) in the New Year 2018 Honours List for services to the community in Larne. Mr. Madden, who lives in Ballycastle, said that he is delighted to be accepting this award on behalf of all the pupils, staff, governors and the entire Roddensvale School community.
When the Chronicle spoke to him following the announcement, he said he was "humbled and highly delighted" to accept the honour and praised the hard work of colleagues, governors, parents and the wider community who have all contributed to make Roddensvale School the special place it is.
Although having been required to keep the news to himself, after receiving his official letter, this proved very difficult for the keen sportsman, who said his phone was now "buzzing" since the news broke.
He said: "I am most pleased for my family. My dad passed away almost three years ago but my mum is delighted that I have been named in the New Year 2018 Honours List. It will be lovely for her to be able to attend the Garden party at Hillsborough Castle. The rest of the family are of course very proud too!"
Having grown up in the West Midlands, it was at teacher training College in Eastbourne where Mr Madden met his wife, Joanne Donnelly, and they settled in Ballycastle where Ms Donnelly is Head of the PE Department at CPC.
