IT WAS with heavy hearts that the people of Bushmills lined the streets last Wednesday evening to pay tribute to well known trader Sammy McLaughlin as he passed his shop on the Main Street for the final time. Sammy passed away peacefully on Monday November 13 following a short illness surrounded by his loving family.
A community giant who lived in Bushmills his whole life, growing up on Church Street and later living at Mount Pleasant, 69-year-old Sammy had been married to Anne for 44 years and they had one daughter, Megan.
A former employee of Bushmills Distillery, Sammy left there to run a turkey farm. But it was after the birth of he and Anne's much awaited daughter that Sammy opened a video shop, followed by his famous ice-cream shop in the centre of Bushmills which he ran for the last 20 years.
Speaking to The Chronicle, Megan paid tribute to the man she idolised, saying he was her inspiration.
She said: "My dad lit up even the darkest room with his one-liners. Everyone loved him. The crowds that lined the street on Wednesday night as we passed through town on our way to Billy Parish Church was testament to that.
