OVER two years in the making, the new 55m A26 Glarryford to Drones Road dual carriageway was officially opened yesterday (Monday).
The Mayors of Causeway Coast and Glens and Mid and East Antrim Borough Councils held the ribbon which was cut by Divisional Roads Manager Deidre Mackle.
Ms Mackle said: "This road scheme will have a significant impact on the 18,000 motorists who use the road daily, halving journey times during peak periods, removing traffic queues, reducing driver frustration and improving safety on the route. "The upgrade, which has retained the iconic Frosses Trees, will also have knock on impacts for the local economy and contribute to wider economic development for the region both in the short and in the long term."
The 8km road includes a new roundabout at the Drones Road and three flyover junctions.
North Antrim MLA Mervyn Storey said: "I am very happy that the new stretch of road is now open and I would pay tribute to the contractors who did an extremely good job.
