Digney to stand thumbnailWell known republican Monica Digney will be standing as an independent candidate in the North Antrim Assembly election.

WELL known North Antrim republican and former Ballymena Sinn Féin councillor, Monica Digney, is to stand in the North Antrim Assembly election as an independent candidate, the Chronicle's sister paper, the Guardian, has revealed. Mrs Digney was one of the high profile members of Sinn Féin who left the party last August, in protest at the treatment of former MLA, Daithi McKay, who resigned over his contact with loyalist blogger, Jamie Bryson, in relation to the NAMA inquiry into the so-called multi-milion pound 'bad bank' property portfolio.
She fiercely criticised the co-option of Philip McGuigan as Mr McKay's replacement and her candidacy puts her in direct competition with him for the republican vote on March 2.
Speaking on Monday yesterday, she said: "I am standing as an independent and I intend to work for everyone in the community, irrespective of their political viewpoint.
