The gift of giving

A BIG-HEARTED Rathlin grandmother has introduced a novel way of helping those in need this Christmas as she GIVES instead of TAKES each day of Advent. Traditionally Advent is a time of expectant waiting and a time of preparation, a period of time when light candles and open windows on our Advent calendars, receiving a special little gift each day.
But whilst we open the brightly coloured doors of our advent calendars, Rathlin Island resident, Teresa McFaul, is putting items INTO a box to give to the local foodbank.
Not only has Teresa decided to fill a box, she has also encouraged other families on Rathlin Island and some in Ballycastle to join her in spreading the true meaning of Christmas.
Explaining how the idea came about, Teresa said: "Back in October I read about something similar on social media and thought it was a lovely idea and something we could all get involved with. It's like a reverse Advent calendar!
“It doesn't take much - just a little item a day through Advent and we could have a good box filled.
“There are a lot of people out there who slip through the net and aren't entitled to benefits or anything, so after discussing my idea with various people, I just decided to go for it. This way the items will be going to those who are in need of them."
Teresa praised her kind neighbours and friends on Rathlin who have got behind her and are also filling boxes of their own.
She said: "Rathlin isn't very big but there's tremendous support for anything you undertake. The local shop has a big box in it for people who want to donate and if members of the public can contribute any small thing it will be much appreciated.
