A Cushendun woman is preparing to swap the hills of Torr for Mount Everest to raise funds for Marie Curie.
Briege Hamilton, a 24-year-old Marketing Co-ordinator, leaves for Nepal this Thursday (February 9) to begin her latest fundraising adventure.
A member of the Moyle Marie Curie Group, she is no stranger to taking on challenges in the name of charity.
In May 2010 she cycled from London to Paris and helps out at local events throughout the year.
She told The Chronicle what inspires her: "The reason I do so much fundraising for Marie Curie is because cancer is so common.
“I am always humbled by how people cope with the illness themselves or watch loved ones in pain.
“I have never had a close friend or family member die with cancer but I have watched endless people in our local community struggle and as a young person with good health I take on these challenges simply because I can!
“Marie Curie's main aim is to help people die at home among loved ones. Many people with cancer have no other choices in their shortened lives so I think this is the least we can do to help."
After arriving in Nepal, Briege will spend the 18 day trip climbing 5500m to Mount Everest's Base Camp along with 19 other people from across the UK.
“I have been training hard for this for over a year now and I'm really excited to be boarding a plane for Nepal. The trip will definitely test my endurance and I will be sure to let everyone know how I got on when I return!" she said.
Briege has covered all the costs of the trip, so every penny she raises will go directly to Marie Curie, and help cancer patients and their families.
