Boy racers ruining lives

Thursday, 1 July 2010

BOY racers in Cushendall are ruining people's lives, a meeting of Moyle DPP has heard.
Glens SDLP councillor Orla Black spoke out about the on-going problem, which is particularly bad in the High Street area of the village.
She said: "Cars are racing all day and night and last night I lay in bed listening to it. People in High Street are suffering and it is getting beyond a joke.
“I know people who have come to Cushendall to stay with family and they couldn't believe how bad it was. They said they couldn't live there anymore.
“It is getting very serious and is ruining people's lives. I don't see police in Cushendall very often and this really needs to be addressed. People are just living with it because they know nothing will be done."
Chief Inspector John Magill said police effort's were hampered by a lack of evidence.
“The difficulty is that people won't tell us who it is or give us evidence. I know sometimes you can't get a registration but if there's no evidence it's difficult for the PPS to bring someone to court.
“I appeal to the DPP to encourage people to tell us who is doing this because as soon as police arrive, drivers leave. If people lost their licences it would deter others from doing it."
Cllr Black said that people who had reported drivers to police had got hassled for 'touting'.
Inspector Hume told the meeting that at least two people on High Street had been intimidated.
She added that police should set up a Facebook which they could use to get information.
